Auto Fills is a MIDI generation application designed to assist in creating drum fills for drum synthesizer applications or hardware setups. This tool operates as an Audio Unit AUv3 plugin and is compatible with various host applications such as AUM, Loopy Pro, Logic Pro, Cubasis, Nanostudio, apeMatrix, among others.
Within the Auto Fills interface, users engage with virtual drum kits. They can opt to build a customized kit by adding drum components and assigning MIDI notes/channels individually. Alternatively, users may streamline the setup process by selecting a template configuration for their preferred application or hardware from the settings menu.
- In Kit mode, users can allocate probability values to each drum component.
- In Velocity mode, users can set specific velocities for individual drum elements and also introduce variance in velocity levels.
- In Duration mode, users can define the length of the drum fill as well as the wait times before and/or after the fill, in beats or bars. If wait durations are specified in Duration mode, the drum fill will not play during these waiting periods.
For those utilizing a favored drum sequencer, Auto Fills can be incorporated into the workflow prior to the drum application in the sequence: Drum sequencer → Auto Fills → Drum App. Users can also prevent incoming MIDI data from the drum sequencer during the drum fill by activating the "block incoming MIDI during the fill" option in Duration mode. Additionally, an option exists to randomize the drum fill pattern on each cycle.
Pivotal to the Kit mode is the assignment of probability values. Users can manipulate the likelihood of a specific drum component playing by adjusting its probability setting. Conversely, decreasing the probability value reduces the frequency of that particular drum element being included in the fill; setting a probability to zero eliminates its presence in the resulting drum fill.
- The Density knob enables users to create rests within the drum fill when decreased, without regenerating the entire pattern.
- The Voices knob dictates the maximum number of simultaneous drum components (polyphony) that can be played during each step of the drum fill.
- The Rate knob establishes the speed of the drum fill sequence.
Furthermore, users have access to a Generate button for regenerating the drum fill instantly. Any modifications made to the kit configuration – such as adding or removing parts, adjusting probabilities, or altering voice counts – trigger an automatic regeneration of the fill.
It is important to note that Auto Fills functions solely as a MIDI application and does not generate sound internally. Users must route Auto Fills MIDI output to their chosen audio application's MIDI input in order to audibly experience the generated content.
